a simple surprise.

When Radley and I first got engaged, someone offered up their favorite marriage advice: "Never stop courting each other." Right away the words sunk in, their meaning crystal clear: Do the little things. Flirt. Be kind. Give of yourself willingly and unprompted. Show your love just because.

On Saturday I woke up to a bouquet of spring flowers and iced coffee in bed. Radley stood in the doorway—dripping wet from the morning rain—wearing an easy shrug of a smile.

This is how much I love you, his expression seemed to say. Enough to tiptoe through the house and let you sleep. Enough to wake up early for the sake of a sweet, simple surprise.

Half-awake, still a bit groggy, I stared at him and tried to focus, doing my best to memorize the moment. I noted his unshaven face, the water marks darkening the green of his jacket, random curls of wavy hair lying wet against his forehead. I etched his shy, suddenly self-conscious laugh in my thoughts, praying that I'd be able to replay the sound in my mind forever, whenever.

Because, however drowsy I may have been, I knew that it was important — the image of the man I love, my almost-husband, loving me in return. It was the picture of his love before the rings, before the house and (hopefully) kids, before the inevitably complicated life that's sure to spread itself out ahead of us. I knew the image was important because it was pure and true.

It was love, just because.

It is the little things like this that show you just how much they love us. My Joe often does little things like this too that let me know exactly how much I am loved, and your Radley sounds to be much the same way. We're the lucky ones, especially since we realize that in the moment too, making it all the more special.
