missing mission beach.

Over the past few years — ever since graduation, really — I've learned that these are the weeks I most miss San Diego. During these end-of-January days, whether I'm in the midst of a blizzard or a rainstorm or even just a bitter cold day, all I can think about is Mission Beach.

I think about the USD campus and how it always reminded me a bit of Greece, stark whites against the deepest ocean blues — never mind that I haven't ever been to Greece. I think about Mission Beach, about driving there at the end of each day. Passing over the bridge just as the sun set over the waterfront rollercoaster. I think about the brightly colored houses, the salty smell of the air, the way tourists flocked in every weekend.

I think about entire mornings spent on the boardwalk, running or walking or some combination from pier to pier. Passing the locals, the rollerbladers, the girls in bikinis. Power-walking moms and vacationing families. I think about surfers and boats and blue, everywhere blue.

It's the blue that I miss this time of year.
In the midst of grays, my mind always goes back to the blue.

so overwhelmingly home sick after reading this! Lately I've been looking back on those days - imagining feeling the sun on my face this time of year - and thinking "was that even real?"

Hi there,
I just stumbled upon your blog. As I was reading through some of your posts I gasped when I saw a picture of USD. I went there too! and lived in mission beach! Small world, we'll have to chat sometime about it. I graduated in 2007. Cheers and great blog!
