happy holidays!

This time last year we were all bundled up, wrapped in scarves and sweaters and double layers of socks, soaking up the start of the season with sledding, skating, and icy walks through the neighborhood. There was a thick blanket of snow on the ground and, more often than not, a steaming cup of coffee or tea or hot chocolate in my hand. I planned outfits around snow boots and never left the house without a hat and an extra pair of gloves, just in case.

Of course, things are a bit different this year. We'll be having a sixty-and-sunny Christmas free of snow or skating or sledding. The sweaters are half as thick, the shoes unlined and the scarves unnecessary. Instead of icy white-washed air there will be the bluest of skies and sunsets over the ocean.

Different. And yet.

Still there will be family—my future in-laws, Radley's parents and grandparents and siblings who have welcomed me with open arms and helped to make this city feel like home. Still there will be a cozy Christmas Eve dinner, early morning presents, and a very likely marathon of board games. Still there will be stockings and ornaments, love and faith and giving, and still it will be the most wonderful time of the year — snow or not.

Friends and family back in Chicago: I adore and miss you, and send you my love.
Here's to a very merry Christmas and a happy holiday season!
