a question, and so many answers.

Recently, while talking to a friend, an interesting question arose--one that keeps twisting itself into my thoughts: When, she asked, do you feel most yourself?

Well, I told her, I feel most myself when I'm in the sun. During the summertime. When my hair is long and loose, my cheeks are a bit sunburnt, and the air carries just a hint of something coconut-scented. When I'm near the water, when I can see the ocean, when the sun sets in shades of pink so dark they're nearly purple.

When I'm wearing jeans and sandals. When I'm beside Radley. When I'm surrounded by family and friends and I'm laughing uncontrollably, inappropriately, at all the wrong times. When I'm biting and sarcastic. When I'm absurdly sentimental. When I'm in the middle of a long run, or a road trip, or a gripping heart-to-heart. When I run into the number thirty-three. When I'm sending the perfect birthday card.

Or when I'm dancing around in my own imagination, winding and unwinding the plot of my latest story. When a breeze drifts in through the open window and the room is filled with the click-click-clicking of computer keys. When the past sneaks into the present. When the present is filled with plans for the future. When inspiration strikes.

I feel most myself at concerts. At bookstores. At Broadway plays and hockey games and crowded cafes. With a camera or a novel or a bunch of red grapes in my hand. Wearing olive green or purple or the brightest, punchiest coral. On Fridays and Sundays.

I'm curious: When do you feel most yourself?

I feel most myself when I am laying on my couch with my favorite blanket reading a novel, or watching a very cheesy-romantic movie. When I sit at the beach alone as the sun is setting. When I walk around town with my camera pretending to be a tourist. When I go to the grocery store and get fruits and pistachio ice-cream. When I wear the perfect pair of jeans, those that are not too tight & fit just perfect. When I go out for drinks with the girls.

I absolutely love this post.
I'm most myself when I'm on the beach on a sunny day, with my sunglasses on and toes in the sand. When I'm cuddled on the couch with my husband or on a road trip over-singing a good song. I'm most myself with my sister, talking fast and laughing loud. When I'm on a dancefloor, letting loose.
So interesting to think about!

Great post! I feel most myself when I'm surrounded by the people I love most. There's no pretending or trying to be something I'm not. It's just 100% me. The good and the bad. It's just perfect.

I'm also myself when I'm curled up with a good book. No makeup on. In my most comfortable PJs and all!

When do I feel MOST myself?
I feel most myself when I am with my very best friends. It is the kind of friendship where it doesn't matter what you look like that day, just that you took time to be together. I am most myself when I am dancing; whether it's a zumba class or on the dance floor this past weekend in Memphis. There are many more but this made me think. :) Thanks for that Laura! Ha hope your having a great week!

I feel most myself when I'm in the mountains with my husband. When I'm away from all the chaos in the world. When I'm away from the every day distractions like computers, cell phones, and televisions. I feel most myself when I'm having a heart to heart with my husband, or best friends.

Beautiful post :)

You're making me think too much! :)
I feel most like myself around my family. That is probably an obvious answer, but it's true. I feel like I can say what I'm thinking and just be myself. Why I'm not like that around anyone else...Who knows!

Absolutely beautiful piece of writing!
I most feel like myself when I'm either in NJ or the Upper South - and I've lived somewhere else three years + trying to make it fit. It has YET to happen. Now, I'm packing - vroom vroom I'm ready to go!

Love this question! I feel the most myself after being active, letting the energy out in bursts and feeling spent but happy afterwards.
