October 20, 2011

dear radley,

I first met you at twenty. Within weeks you bought me flowers and I called you charming. Your hair was buzzed and my hair was curly and I fell in love with you so easily and instantly that it didn't feel like falling at all, but more like floating or sailing or sinking back into an old favorite chair. You rode a motorcycle and I dressed in bright colors, and soon we couldn't remember our lives without each other.

At twenty-one I met your family and introduced you to mine. It was the year you taught me to cook, the year I convinced you to dance. Your hair grew longer, mine blonder. On Valentine's Day we played laser tag with all our friends-turned-family. That spring we saw six concerts and went on three road trips and in my diary I wrote that you might be The One--that you had the kindest, most beautiful heart I'd ever known.

Twenty-two carried us out of college, out of San Diego, and finally to Chicago. To our first apartment together, to our first careers and our first Thanksgiving and our very first Christmas tree. My accent came back, my hair turned dark. You started to brew beer. Our lives intertwined and so did our DVR, so I embraced Conan and you got to know Oprah. We had living room picnics and rooftop card games and I learned what it's like to love someone so much that you don't mind doing their dishes.

You asked me to marry you at twenty-three. I said yes. Life became so clear that I could see right through it--right through it and into the most wonderful, joyful future with you.

Today you turn twenty-four, exactly six months after I did. Which, I have to say, feels quite appropriate--our birthdays, six months apart. Because that's what they say, after all, isn't it? Opposites attract and all that.

This year, your birthday feels especially special. For one thing, we're back in California and things feel a bit like they've come full circle. But mostly this year feels special because I woke up thinking that for the rest of my life, I'll be able to say that today is my husband's birthday. And for the millionth, trillionth time since first meeting you, I felt like the luckiest, giddiest girl in the world.

Happiest of birthdays to my best friend, my almost husband, my forever and ever.
Wishing you health and contentment and an endless supply of Goldfish for the coming year :)
