July 12, 2011

a whole lot of new.

When I think of the past couple weeks--and the busy weeks ahead--I think: overwhelming.

But it's the very best kind of overwhelming--a flood of so much good that I can't even sleep at night. I'm overwhelmed with gratitude, with love and excitement for things to come. In the next month I'll be moving to a new city, living in a new apartment, starting a new job, and beginning to plan a wedding. So, you know, like I said: it's a lot. A lot of new, a lot of joy, and a lot of big changes--ones I'm welcoming with open arms.

I'm looking forward to this next chapter, confident that it will bring plenty of adventure and inspiration into my life. And, yes, I'll be sharing a lot of it with all of you, but--disclaimer--I won't be telling any of the wedding details until the big day :) It's important to me that it be a surprise for friends and family (and for all of you) so no, this won't be turning into a wedding blog. (Funny: I can imagine half of you sighing in relief while the rest of you--all the hopeless romantics out there--sigh in disappointment!)

In the midst of all this craziness, though, I really do want to thank you again for all the well wishes--the texts, emails, comments, tweets, messages. It's meant so much to us to hear from family and friends, and I've found it especially fun to hear from readers. For the millionth time I've realized how cool and special this community is, and I hope you know how much I appreciate your support.

Oh, and--okay--before I begin this vow of wedding silence, I'd like to ask for a bit of advice from all of you past and present brides! I'm curious: What were your favorite bridal resources? What, in your opinion, are the must do's and the must not do's? If you could go back and do it all over again, what kind of encouragement or suggestions might you give your engaged self?

I'd be grateful for any and all kinds of advice :) Thank you!

I'm one of the disappointed sigh-ers! ;) But here are a few sites I recommend!
- stylemepretty.com is the mother of all wedding blogs...absolutely start there!
- greenweddingshoes.com focuses on unique, California weddings
- heygorg.com features tons of advice, pep talks, and real wedding inspiration, plus the writer so sweet
- ruffledblog.com is a great source for vintage wedding inspiration, if that's the style you decide to go for
- iloveswmag.com is Southern Wedding's website, and even if you're not having an actual Southern wedding, there's tons of inspiration!
-and I have to mention my own weddings style blog, which is a mismatch of wedding styling advice, inspiration boards, etc :) something-pretty.net
Hope that helps!
Lisa

Congrats on the engagement! I don't have any advice other than create a day you actually want. If you want carrot cake, pink shoes, and a send-off with sparklers then do it!

I also am among the disappointed sighers, howeveer I can understand the secrecy. As far as advice goes, you have to check out gowns by maggie soterro, she is simply brilliant and almost all of her gowns are to die for!

The only thing I would do over with my wedding: choosing what was the most important to me from the beginning. By the time I considered this, there was little left in the budget for the level of photography I really wanted. Good luck!!

Oh, goodness ~ such an exciting time! My best advice? Try to enjoy every minute, every decision, every step along the way. Best wishes, sweet girl!

I've been married for almost four years so some of my information is outdated, but The Knot was a HUGE help to me when planning our wedding - especially because of the messaging boards, my local one was a lifesaver!

My tips for wedding planning: sit down with Radley and pick the three things that are most important to you that day (besides getting hitched of course!). For us it was invitations, cake, and photography. Once you pick your "top three" try not to stress about the rest - things always fall into place even when you think they won't.

Be good to your bridesmaids. Even the most budget-conscious bride has costs that your girls will pay, so when you get them gifts to say thank you have them be specific to their personalities, and not the generic "here have a necklace to wear in my wedding that you'll never wear anywhere else."

Remember that it's only one day - a wonderful day, but it's your lifetime together to look forward to. Things will go wrong, but at the end of the day as long as you're married, you're set.

Happy planning!!! :)

It sounds like so many wonderful things are happening for you! Congratulations!!! I definitely gave a sigh of disappointment :) I think the best advice I can give is don't get your heart set on it being perfect. Because things always go wrong, and it will be a wonderful day no matter what if you don't let those things get to you :) xoxo

That is a lot of changes, but it seems really exciting! I'm also, almost positive, getting a new apartment, which would be my first ever apartment so far, which is exciting. I wish it was in a new city as well, but I have to start small!
And with the wedding details, I think it's great that you want to keep it all private until the big day! It'll keep us all more in suspense to keep reading. Which, admit it, is your evil plan all along!

Congratulations!!!

The Knot was a HUGE help, particularly two things - the wedding checklist and the budgeting tool. The wedding checklist had everything that I needed to do listed, and it gave time frames for when it needed to be done. It was amazing. The budget sheet allowed me to input my total amount and then allocated funds to various expenses. It was great!

My big advice would be to talk to your fiance and decide what is important to you. For us, it was a good party. We wanted our wedding to be a celebration! So our important things were a good DJ and good food. We definitely spent more on those two things...and cut money for flowers etc. Once you decide what is the most important, it's easy to see where to cut.

Finally, I cannot promote having a day-of wedding coordinator enough! If you are getting married in Southern CA and want a recommendation, please let me know. Mine was fabulous. I could not have had a beautiful, stress-free wedding without her.

Good luck and have so much fun planning!

Congratulations on your engagement! I am just catching up after being on vacation. Radley's proposal sounds beautiful. I'm one of the romantics who wouldn't mind you turning this into a wedding blog but I'll just have to be excited to see the details after the wedding. :)
