the proposal (part III.)

It's true that the actual proposal moment was the best of my life, but the rest of the night carried a different sort of magic all its own--an easy, blissed-out energy that made me feel like a little girl. Like there was going to be a snow day or I'd just gotten a new bike or, I don't know, I'd won a gazillion trillion dollars and could build an island full of mansions for me and all my friends. I was kid-happy, you know?
After announcing our engagement to family and friends--and telling my nephews and nieces they could officially call him "Uncle" Radley--we went to The Chicago Firehouse for the most amazing candlelit dinner. And even though I wasn't the least bit hungry, even though my stomach was tied in the happiest of knots, I was still able to force down some crazy good garlic potatoes. Oh, and plenty of champagne :)

The weather was perfect--warm and breezy--so we decided to take a long, lingering walk through Millenium Park. We passed Buckingham Fountain and the Art Institute and the Chicago Theatre, posing for pictures beside all our favorite monuments. What really got me, though, was the city lit up in red, white, and blue; the word liberty spread across banners; flags hanging from the lampposts... I just love the Fourth of July.

And more than once people pointed out the hilarious irony of celebrating our engagement on Independence Day--laughing about that whole "tied down" thing. But the truth is--even if it's cliche, even if it sounds cheesy and ridiculous and totally scripted--I've honestly never felt freer in my life.

Because real love--the best kind of love--makes you feel free to be yourself.
Free to let go, hold on, take risks, and move forward.
Free to be wildly, absurdly happy.

And I am.
I really, really am.
