the proposal (part I.)

Wow... I have to start with a big, sincere thank you for all the heartfelt congratulations! We were completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of well wishes this weekend, and I just wanted to let you know how much it's meant to me to hear from so many readers, too. Thankyouthankyouthankyou!

And as for the proposal story, I've decided that I'd like to keep some of the most special details to myself, but over the next few days I will be posting about the bigger parts that came together and made July 3rd one of the best days--or actually, yes, the absolute best day!--of my life.

First, I'll share a bit about the set-up:
In order to get all of his secret plans together, Radley enlisted the help of my two lifelong best friends--Heidi and Kira--who whisked me away for the day while he was "at work." Sunday morning, just to really throw me off, he truly did wake up early, get dressed for work, go through his morning routine, and then leave the house... Little did I know, though, he wasn't actually scheduled to work--instead, he was busy gathering things together for the big event later that night...
Meanwhile, the girls and I went to a fabulous brunch at Grand Lux Cafe, where we filled up on toast and coffee and our shared Fourth of July memories--the good, the bad, and the absolutely hilarious. We swapped old stories from elementary school, people-watched through the floor-to-ceiling windows, and laughed in that easy, bouncy way that makes life feel light as a feather.
These two, they're the same friends who used to curl up on my bunk beds and brainstorm the names of our future children, sketch out the cut of our dream wedding dresses, imagine how our future husbands might look, what song we might choose for our first dance. In other words: there couldn't have been better people by my side that day. Already, I felt lifted.
After brunch, then, we strolled along Michigan Avenue until we reached the Wrigley Building, where we watched the boats pass along the river below us. It was sunny and breezy but warm--like a day of California weather--and I must have said a million times how happy I was, how much I loved the day.
All afternoon we walked (and skipped) throughout the city, giddy and silly and just spectacularly happy, delighted in one another's company and eager to celebrate our favorite holiday. It was already--even before it really, really was--the sort of day I knew I'd always remember.
Oh, and they were quite on top of their game, too, because in the midst of all our gallivanting throughout the city, they also suggested we get our nails done. I mean, really, what are best friends for, right? And here's what's just totally crazy about the whole thing: The first nail polish color I looked at? "Catch The Garter." The second color? "Otherwise Engaged." The third? "Starter Wife."

Later, Heids and Kira told me they almost lost it.
... And as for me, I'll admit: I was hoping it might just be a sign :)
