June 6, 2011

This photo--which I snapped at the end of my street yesterday--captures quite perfectly why I adore Chicago in the summertime. There's so much life all of a sudden, so much color; it's such a welcome change after months and months of winter's white, empty streets.

And I'm always struck, too, always charmed by the chorus of sounds this time of year: the music from a passing ice cream truck, noisy pickup basketball games at the outdoor courts, spirited conversation spilling from the bars and cafes whose walls have been drawn up so that they're open to the streets. It's as if you can literally hear the city coming alive--as if you can hear its very happiness.

Chicago and me, we aren't always on the same page.
But every June--without fail--she charms me all over again.
And as of yesterday, yes: I'm absolutely smitten.

I've never been to Chicago - it's on our list of places to visit. Everyone I know that's been there really enjoyed it! I'll remember to visit in June sometime!
