March 21, 2011

because i'll probably be (more than) a little enthusiastic.

Sometimes, the anticipation of something wonderful is even better than the thing itself. Sometimes, the anticipation is everything, the only thing, and when you arrive to whatever you've been awaiting, it's a bit of a letdown--not quite what you'd had in mind, not quite what you'd expected or imagined it would be.

This New York trip, though? It's exactly what I'd wished for.

See, I'd hoped for something sort of remarkable, something bordering--if only slightly--on magic. And that's what I've gotten, what I'm right in the midst of. The days have been long and sunny and filled to the brim with indulgences: breathtaking views, decadent meals, long and lingering afternoons spent people watching at outdoor cafes.

It's what I live for, really--time to step out of myself, out of my world, to play the observer to a place I don't know. Some people are uncomfortable when they're on the outside looking in, but not me. I find it freeing, inspiring.

All of this is to say that I apologize in advance for the inevitable gushing I'll be doing this week. It's just that February was a bit hard, a bit gloomy. And that melancholy, it lingered for a while when March rolled around, threatening to last straight through to April. But this lovely little recess from it all has saved me, left me absolutely smitten with spring and New York and writing, all over again.

... See? Like I said--gushing.

This is exactly how I feel about my California trip. It was everything I wished for and more. Yayy to little getaways, they're kind of refreshing.

I get just like that whenever I go to NYC. The kind of energy of the city, everything about it just makes it so easy to love & gush. I can't wait to hear more about your trip - I just hope it doesn't make me horribly sick with longing to go :)

I like the gushing, I like the enthusiasm, I like the resolve it has instilled back into you. And being passionate about things like writing and reading and art is one of the finest and the most beautiful things in life. So glad you are having a good time---especially so that the actuality is just as good as the dream.
