a list of little things | habits i should probably change (and probably won't)

habits i should probably change (and probably won't)
watching reality television--particularly those on Bravo, E! and TLC.
telling myself I can't do something before I've even tried... (I'm looking at you, surfing.)
dressing like a guy--not in a cute, menswear-inspired way, but in more of a 10 year old boy way.
missing the past, daydreaming about the future, and forgetting about the present.
eating the same foods nearly every single day... but seriously.
saying 'awkward' way too much--although, to be fair, a lot of my life is pretty awkward.
color-coding my calendar/closet/bookshelf when I could be off saving the world. (Or something.)
following celebrity gossip via People magazine and (yes... sigh) Perez.
using parentheses with abandon. (What can i say, I enjoy asides.)
holding onto people, things, and moments that really aren't so good for me.
killing our oh-so-beautiful houseplants regularly and often.
continuing to purchase said houseplants despite my knack for killing them.
depending on caffeine--in its myriad of wonderful forms--for my energy/happiness/life.
calling friends A, B, and C instead of doing chores 1 through 25. Okay, 30.
talking about books, writers, stories and such incessantly. Repeatedly. Always.
... and, well, listing my bad habits instead of changing them. Go figure.

I'm curious: what habits do you think you should change?
Any you've already changed? Any you're currently trying to change?

oh my gosh this list is so true to my life I can't even tell you (like a lot)

Did you ever watch Beauty and the Geek? It only had one season but I think it was on Bravo and it made me giggle. IT was also pretty awkward.

I just got really happy. :-)

i love this!! i do so many of the same things you do (esp caffeine...danger! haha). one of the things i'm trying to change is to let go of trying to control things that are..well, out of my control. i end up getting flustered and stressed over stupid stuff (how people act, my work schedule, etc) when i should just be grateful and at peace with everything. yoga and journaling have helped a lot :) thanks for writing!! (p.s- i saw that you're from glen ellyn...i am from wheaton! :D) xoxo

I agree with another comment-procrastination!! I always do that. I need to STOP!
I say I'm working on it, then I procrastinate and then I don't...you get the picture.

I had the caffeine goal, and mastered it! :) I used to drink Diet Coke like crazy, then got tired of the dependency and the headaches (when I had too much, or didn't have any). Now, I don't really drink pop at all, coffee on a very rare occasion and most all of the time, I drink Water and Tea. I have been working on appreciating life for exactly what it is, and the little things...as well as, blogging more! I love doing it, it's just a matter of making time to do it more, oh and reading more. :)

I tend to spend too much time color coding my books and closet as well hehe. But something I seriously have to stop doing is procrastinating.

oh my goodnees! I relate to maybe every one of these bad habits...I recently realized my boy-dressing tendencies, everything I own is baggy. Love comfort. haha!

I get in all types of ruts---food, emotional, relationship, etc---and need to work harder to lift myself out. I buy the same stuff at the grocery store with every trip. Sigh. These are all great! And don't break that reality television habit...it's the best escape :) I'm loving all the Real Housewives.

Your blog is beautiful and inspiring! I'm sure you get that all the time but just hope you don't forget that :)

I made a list too....

procrastination is...a general problem :). I'm trying to watch less tv, going to the gym more days in a week (remember that post about a friend of your's who always had time to chill out? - i decided to do the same and went to the sauna and jacuzzi at the gym - life is sweet!),
Also decided to dedicate my goodwill to people who actually deserve it, more sleep, less procrastination, more books, less websurfing, more activities outdoors, less doing-nothing at home, and the list goes on and on :)

I joined 100 day challenge, and it's being a bless.
I'm much more active and i do much more productive work, i'm trully enjoying it so far!

the bad habit I need to change is biting my nails. I'm currently working on it and I'm actually doing pretty good this time! I'm about two weeks in... they say it takes 30 to really break a habit, right? here's hoping I can stick to it!

oh, and I love parentheses. and your asides :)

Watch less TV, read more challenging books, go to the doctor, eat more "real" food, volunteer once or twice and complete a half-marathon. These goals are so doable! I need to stay fired up, love knowing the rest of you are doing it too.

i could have written almost every single one of your goals... especially with the title you put up top.

I love this list! I would have to say my unrealistic view of the bay area ... I seem to think things are a lot closer than their actual distance ... so day trips are no problem for me ... this won't change. Coffee and my addiction to good coffee I am trying to find a balance and drink green tea instead ... it makes me appreciate a good latte when I've been drinking tea all week. XO!

Oh, I can so relate to you on many of these things...I hate it when I'm doing something and in the back of my mind, I know I shouldn't, but I just...can't...stop :) It's so hard to change habits sometimes, especially when you're overwhelmed by a lot that you want to change! But I think the thing I'm going to work on most is trying to focus on the present...I think I'll try to make that my theme of 2011 :)

I gave up caffeine last month and I cannot tell you how much better I feel! My stress levels are waaay down...but this could also be due to the TONS of yoga that i've been doing lately too...hmm...Either way, I've started my year off well, and I hope the same for you too!

I know I always say this, but I love the list of little things series : )

I should probably stop buying so many lattes from Starbucks and magazines off of the newsstand, stopping hitting snooze four times in the morning, stop biting my nails, stop drinking so much caffeine/diet pop, stop buying and using so many post-it notes, and stop leaving so many throw blankets all over my bed.

So far I've managed to subscribe to the magazines I bought the most, reduce (but not stop) consuming so much Starbucks and diet pop, and stop biting my nails (as much).
