what i learned this week:

  • Beets are a wonderfully wonderful food, and the fact that it took me twenty-three years to try them and figure this out is nothing short of an absolute tragedy.
  • The new Sara Bareilles cd is, well, phenomenal.
  • Stories written in the second person can touch you in a different, more gut-wrenching way than you'd ever expect. {See: Lorrie Moore's "How To Speak To Your Mother" and Bonnie Jo Campbell's "The Solutions to Brian's Problem." Disclaimer: these pieces are seriously intense.}
  • If you watch Oprah's season premiere, you will cry.
  • If you watch just about any episode of Friday Night Lights, you will cry.
  • The Book Cellar is the most wonderful bookstore in the world... or, at least, in Chicago.
  • And, okay, I definitely already knew this--but this week I was reawakened to the fact that Meg seriously has a way with words. I mean, seriously.
What things did you learn this week?

I lovve Lorrie Moore! "How to be an Other Woman" is a must-read. Delightfully cheeky, yet very human and real.

oh man. you are way, way too kind.
and so glad to know that about sara's cd because while i love the single i wasn't sure if i should get the whole thing. i think you've convinced me. and i can't wait to read the two pieces you've listed.

again, thanks for the massive compliment--it means so much.

xo.

I experienced a similar situation with beets -- I think that my mom's canned beets just weren't my style when I was little, but a nice roasted beet nowadays is a treat!

Lorrie Moore is fantastic— "How to Become a Writer" just strikes a chord with me. Stories told in second person have always been some of my favourites—you should read Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's "The Thing Around Your Neck."

I've never tried beets but maybe I should! I recently discovered a love for tomatoes and avocados that I never knew before, so perhaps beets would pleasantly surprise me as well!

and yes, sara's new CD is AMAZING! I'm going to her concert in LA on the 28th and I just. can't. wait! so excited.

hope you are having a good weekend!

I cried at every Oprah episode this week. When she does big giveaways I just start laughing uncontrollably and then shed tears. It's like I'm in the audience.

I totally agree about Sara's new cd. It is so good! I've listened to it at least once a day since it came out.

You are also so right about FNL! I cry in just about every episode! I can't believe we only get one more season!
