the golden rule.

I'm struck, always, by the way that so many of us tend to treat absolutely everyone in the room so much better than we treat ourselves.

We take care to follow the golden rule and treat others as we'd like to be treated... but for some reason, we don't treat ourselves as we'd like to be treated.

We forgive their flaws but curse our own.
We commend their risk-taking but brand ours stupidity.
We celebrate their successes but belittle our own.

And what I keep wondering is: why?

Why do we make light of ourselves--downplay our triumphs, underestimate our abilities, shrug off our talents?

Why--as we shine the spotlight on others--do we dim our own spark?

We would never dream of treating someone else so cruelly... so why do we find it acceptable to handle ourselves with such a lack of compassion?

Let's do ourselves a favor.
Let's pledge kindness to ourselves.
And that, I think, will be something to celebrate.

Such a sweet and important post. Recently, I bought a bottle of wine I've been wanting to try for some friends as a thank you gift. A little bit later, I realized that I'd never tried it because I'd never let myself buy it for me, but I readily bought it for friends. So I went out and bought another bottle. :)

a very true and well-spoken (or, well-written, I should say) post. it is always so much easier to be kind to others and hard on ourselves. I will definitely be pledging to be more kind to myself. thank you!

p.s. just read your post about Emily Giffin and I just want to say how amazing it is that you got to meet with her and share stories... not everyone gets to do that with their idol! I haven't read any of her books but you made me want to! :)* said... [Reply to comment]

If we shine the spotlight on ourselves too much, we'd be vainer than the vainest Hollywood star. And if no one belittles us we'd have nothing to conquer.
But I guess the real answer is, if we stop pushing ourselves we won't go anywhere.
