l'espoir

In art class when I was younger, I'd always sketch out a design in pencil before actually painting anything - terrified of making a mistake, terrified I wouldn't be happy with the final product.

The habit has continued, only now my perfectionism is heightened: before I paint, I sketch out my entire design in colored pencil first, planning not only what will go where, but also what color everything will be.
So far, of course, this is just a sketch - one that I did while watching the oscars - but I plan on painting it with watercolors over the next couple days. It is titled l'espoir, the French word for hope--because as Emily Dickinson says: hope is the thing with feathers....

And, of course, what do I hope to be? A writer.
